Note: Due to time constraints, I will unfortunately no longer be able to update this site. The web resources on this page are divided into two sections: sources critical of scientology, and official Scientology sources. Within these sections they are listed in alphabetical order. Sources I particularly recommend are highlighted in bold. Sources Critical of ScientologyIn addition to the sources below, it should go without saying that Google and Wikipedia are your friends.
The Aberree - A web archive of one of the earliest voices to speak out against Scientology: a newsletter called The Aberree published in the 50s and 60s. AnonNewsWire - A news site for Anonymous where anyone can post news.
Anonymous: Still Alive - Provides some good introductory information and has a directory of active groups. ARC Break - Not a source of information, but rather a simple page with an easy-to-remember web address for Scientologists with doubts to begin their journey out of the Church. Basically a "front page" for the Ex Scientologist website. Caroline Letkeman's website - Caroline is an ex-Scientologist. She updates frequently with links to lots of articles. Chris Owen's website - Hasn't been updated in a long time, but contains many good documents, including extensive documentation of the Church's long battle with the IRS and their eventual agreement. The Church of Scientology vs. the Net - A history of the long struggle between the Church of Scientology and the Internet, which far predates Anonymous. This website is very out-of-date but still has a lot of good information. Church of Spiritual Technology: IRS Approved - Exposes links between the IRS and the Church of Spiritual Technology, which owns all of L. Ron Hubbard's copyrights. David S. Touretzky's website - Scroll to the bottom of this professor's website and you'll find a section on Scientology. There you'll find such gems as Secrets of Scientology, Narconon Exposed, OT III Scholarship, Secrets of the E-meter, and Secret Library of Scientology. Disconnection Hurts - Read the stories of families who have suffered under the Church's policy of "Disconnection." End the Cult - A wiki created by Anonymous with critical information about Scientology. Help them out by contributing what you know! Escape - A Christian website dedicated to helping the families of Scientologists get their loved ones out. Ex Scientologist - A safe starting point for Scientologists who are thinking of leaving the Church. Includes active forums where ex-Scientologists share their stories. Ex Scientology Kids - By ex-Scientologists, for ex-Scientologists. A great place to read inside stories of those who've gotten out. The site has its own forums too. Ex Sea Org - A resource to help Sea Org members who want to get out...or maybe just have doubts. Fair Gamed - Many documented examples of the Church's "Fair Game" policy in action. Fair Game Stop - Browse a rogue's gallery of Scientologists who have used Fair Game tactics against the Church's critics, and submit your own information if you have any. Famous Scientologists - An extensive list of celebrities in the Church of Scientology. Includes both past and current, both living and dead. Somewhat out of date. (Note: Wikipedia's list of Scientologists is also good.) Gerry Armstrong's website - Gerry is an ex-Scientologist. His legal archive and writings section document his extensive personal struggle against the Church. Graham Berry's website - Mr. Berry is a lawyer who has put his legal expertise to work fighting the injustices of the Church. Grey Comet - Provides a good, straightforward overview of the whole Anonymous vs. Scientology struggle. Geared toward the general public. Holy Smoke, Entry on Scientology - Holy Smoke exposes all sorts of nonsense peddled in the name of religion. Their page on Scientology focuses on the Church's many attacks on its critics. Jeff Lee's website - A lot of information about specific unethical actions taken by the Church. The Church documents seized by the FBI are a must-read; more FBI-seized documents, relating to the Church's attempts to destroy Gabriel Cazares's political career, can be found here. Gabriel Cazares was the mayor of Clearwater, Florida, and an outspoken critic of the Church. Karin Spaink's website - Lots of good stuff, including an extensive debunking of the Church's claim that their founder, L. Ron Hubbard, was a war hero. Keith Henson's website - Documents the legal battle between the Church and one of its critics. Website seems to be a bit out of date. Lermanet - Website of prominent ex-Scientologist Arnie Lerma. Contains a wide assortment of valuable resources, including this Penthouse interview with L. Ron Hubbard Jr. Lisa Files - Extensive documentation of the events surrounding the tragic death of Lisa McPherson, Scientologist. Lisa McPherson Memorial - Besides paying tribute to Lisa, this website contains a variety of other resources, including photographic tours of major Scientology sites. LMT International - Lots of information about specific abuses by the Church. Marcab Groups Network - An Anonymous networking site that allows users to create groups for targeting specific goals.
Narconon Exposed - Provides a good general overview of Narconon, the Church's ineffective and dangerous "drug rehab" program. NarCONon is Scientology - Lots and lots of documentation about Narconon. This website is not well-organized and hasn't been updated in a while, but there's still plenty to see for those willing to dig through it all. Operation Clambake - One of the most prominent critical sites on the web, run by critic Andreas Heldal-Lund. Famous for its domain name "xenu.net". Covers a diverse range of Scientology topics. Includes a pretty comprehensive glossary of Scientology terms and an excellent archive of the FBI's files on L. Ron Hubbard, among other things. Psych Assault - Documents the Church's ongoing war against the psychiatric profession. Website is somewhat out of date. Raul Lopez's website - Documents how the Church swindled a disabled man for many thousands of dollars. Rick Ross Institute - A massive archive of Scientology news articles sorted by topic. Scientollywood - Notes the influence Scientologists have had on the entertainment industry. Scientology Critical Directory - An excellent website with a truly massive database on Scientology's beliefs, practices, critics, and victims. A good starting point for any investigation. If you scroll down a bit from their main page, you'll find a great "current events" news section. Scientology Criticism (UK) - Focuses on Scientology in the UK. Includes a large media archive.
Scientology Disconnection - Contains many stories on the Church's policy of breaking up families. Scientology Exposed - An Anonymous planning site. Scientology Lies - A good, comprehensive site on the Church and its many frauds and abuses. Scientology Kills - Focuses on Scientologists who have died under suspicious circumstances. Scientology Raided - A huge amount of documentation of arrests, police raids, and Scientology's numerous other troubles with the law. Unorganized and out-of-date but still worth digging through. Scientology v. Education - Details the absurdities of Scientology's "study tech" and exposes Applied Scholastics for the fraud it is. The Skeptic's Dictionary, Entry on Dianetics/Scientology - Focuses on debunking Scientology's claims to being real science. The Smoking Gun, Entry on L. Ron Hubbard - Contains scans of written correspondence between L. Ron Hubbard and the FBI. Solitary Trees - A variety of useful information. Includes a collection of writings about Scientology, an archive of pickets (from the pre-Anonymous days), and other good stuff. Stop WISE - Exposes the "World Institute of Scientology Enterprises." This website is a little disorganized and out-of-date, but there's still a lot of good information. Tax-Exempt Child Abuse and Neglect - An archive of instances of child abuse within Scientology. Site hasn't been updated in a while. Through the Door - A huge collection of simple question-and-answer interviews filled out by ex-Scientologists. Tilman Hausherr's website - A variety of information, including a collection of the writings of Jon Atack. TIME article, "The Thriving Cult of Greed and Power" - An incredibly long, detailed, razor-sharp article in TIME magazine about the Church of Scientology. The Church launched a massive (and unsuccessful) campaign of litigation against its author. Tory Magoo's website - Tory is an ex-Scientologist who was in the Church for thirty years. Truth About Scientology - Delivers exactly what its name promises. Includes a very useful section where you can look up a Scientologist by name and see what levels they've completed. Unfunny Truth - An introductory video for the public that explains why Scientology isn't just a bunch of weird beliefs - it's a lot worse. Volunteer Minister Program - A huge amount of documentation about Scientology's Volunteer Ministers. Fairly unorganized and hasn't been updated in a while, but still a lot of good information. Watchman Articles - Articles from a Christian viewpoint on a variety of Scientology topics. What Is Anonymous - Gives a good overview of what Anonymous is and why we're protesting the Church of Scientology. Not all pages have content yet. Why Are They Dead - Examines the suspicious deaths of many people connected to Scientology. Why We Protest - A good starting point for new Anonymous members. The forums are a hive of activity, one of the central hubs of the whole movement. There are far too many good, informative threads on these forums for me to even summarize the best of them, but I have to point out this thread as an extremely useful collection of Church-related documents. WikiLeaks - Hosts a lot of documents Scientology doesn't want you to see. Wog Blog - Personal blog of Mark Bunker, a.k.a. Wise Beard Man. Xenu France (English section) - Many, many Scientology-related source documents. Xenu TV - Mark Bunker's video website. Hosts interviews, speeches, and other must-watch media. One of the best critical sites on the web. You Found the Card - A primer for the public on the harm Scientology causes. Part of a viral strategy by Anonymous - cards and pieces of paper that say "http://YouFoundTheCard.com" are distributed in public places. Similarly, money (bills) stamped with "http://YouFoundTheCash.com" are entered into circulation, as that URL also redirects here. Official Scientology SourcesIf you haven't noticed by now, information that comes directly from the Church is not exactly trustworthy. Do not automatically believe anything on the websites below.Church of Scientology Home Page - Like most Scientology web pages, their home page is slick, clean, and bright. High production values are obvious. Some of the many highlights of scientology.org are the official glossary of Scientology terms, the laughably inaccurate L. Ron Hubbard official biography, and the online version of their "Oxford Capacity Analysis" Personality Test (which has no actual connection to Oxford, but gosh, it sure sounds more impressive that way, doesn't it?). Note that the plain URL "scientology.org" now leads you to an obnoxious video library rather than their actual home page. Artists for a Better World - An artists' group with strong connections to Scientology. Applied Scholastics - These people have the unenviable task of making L. Ron Hubbard's "study tech" look like a legitimate educational tool, and not a front for converting people to Scientology. Website comes complete with hilarious illustrations. Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE) - ABLE is the umbrella group that encompasses Applied Scholastics, Criminon, Narconon, and The Way to Happiness. (NOTE: This website has been down a lot lately. I guess they're having trouble keeping the servers up...) Auditing - Describes the process of auditing and its benefits in a fair amount of detail. Contains such amusing quotes as "The goal of auditing is to restore beingness and ability." Author Services, Inc. - If you can sit through the ridiculous music and animations, you may eventually get to some information on Author Services, a literary agency with only one client: L. Ron Hubbard. Author Services also administers the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contest. Bonafide Scientology - This site delves into the theoretical underpinnings of Scientology. A good cure for insomnia. Includes the Scientology Creed, a section on official doctrine, and the truly mind-boggling Axioms of Scientology. The Axioms are a personal favorite of mine, partly because they are described as "proven" (which completely misunderstands the concept of an axiom), and partly because Axiom 25 was my first introduction to the word "sexingness." Bridge Publications, Inc. - The publisher for Scientology books within North America. (For publications outside North America, see New Era Publications.) Celebrity Centre International - Scientology wants YOU! Especially if you're rich. Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) - The CCHR is Scientology's private crusade against psychiatry. Fun fact: many Scientologists actually believe that Anonymous is controlled by psychiatrists. Citizens for Social Reform (CSR) - CSR sponsors a political action committee (PAC) dedicated to promoting Scientology in the legislative arena. Criminon - Scientology's program for rehabilitating criminals. I guess this makes sense - nobody knows crime like the Church of Scientology. Cult Awareness Network (CAN) - This is one of those really scary stories that makes you understand why the Church is so dangerous. The CAN was one of the Church's most vocal critics, until the Church sued them into bankruptcy and then bought them out in a hostile takeover. That means that today, if you call up the CAN to get more information about Scientology? Yep...you'll be speaking to a Scientologist. Dianetics - A slick opening video introduces you to the wonderful world of Dianetics. Dianetics: the less you think about it, the better it sounds! (TM) e.Republic - One of Scientology's best-kept secrets, e.Republic is to all appearances a perfectly normal and legitimate IT company. Nowhere on their website do they mention that most employees are Scientologists, or that all new hires are given a book by L. Ron Hubbard on their first day. Exact Scientology - A huge list of links to other Scientology websites, many of them redundant or out-of-date. Still, worth a browse. Fight For Kids - Created by the CCHR, Fight For Kids reveals the horrible things psychiatrists are doing to our children. You know, I actually agree with them that today's children are over-medicated. I'm just not so sure that waking up their hidden engrams about Lord Xenu is the solution. Flag Service Organization - The "spiritual headquarters" of the Church, located in Clearwater, Florida. Foundation for a Drug-Free World - Now with more slang drug terms than you would ever have thought possible. Freedom Magazine - The Church's official magazine. Freewinds - Yes, they actually have a church on a cruise ship. No, I am not kidding. Freewinds is the only place in the world you can reach OT VIII. Galaxy Press - Publisher of L. Ron Hubbard's fictional works. Well, okay, the ones they'll admit are fictional. Golden Era Productions - Sells L. Ron Hubbard's lectures in audio form. As a side note, this site also has one of the more amusing paintings of Hubbard that I've seen. Hubbard College of Administration - A business school headquartered in Los Angeles with campuses around the world. I use the word "school" loosely, since they're not actually accredited. Their website actually claims that Hubbard's management system is "the most used system on earth." Folks, I can't make this stuff up. Human Rights News Forum - Scientology is very interested in human rights. After all, how can you violate them if you don't know what they are? International Academy of Detoxification Specialists - A membership organization for people who actually believe in Hubbard's drug rehab methods. International Association of Scientologists (IAS) - Join the IAS to get discounts on books and lectures. Cost: $500 per year. Now, think about that. How much do you have to be spending on books and lectures for a discount to be cost-effective at $500 per year? Jive Aces - A jive and swing band in the UK, composed entirely of Scientologists. To their credit, they don't hide the fact, and their music doesn't sound half bad. L. Ron Hubbard - Confusingly, there appear to be no fewer than four official websites for Scientology's founder: lronhubbard.org, lron.hubbard.org, www.lronhubbard.org, and aboutlronhubbard.org. These are not just different domains, they are actually completely separate sites. I'm really not sure what the point is, but if you want to spend hours reading effusive praise of a B-list science fiction author, you've come to the right place(s)! Mental Health Abuse - Another CCHR website against psychiatry. Narconon - Scientology's organization for getting people off drugs. Turns out all it really takes is vitamins and a sauna! Oh, and $10,000, of course. New Era Publications - The publisher for Scientology books outside of North America. (For publications within North America, see Bridge Publications.) Religious Freedom Watch - A vicious smear campaign by the Church against its most prominent critics. Would probably be scarier if the charges leveled against these people weren't so nonsensical. One page on the site actually refers to Ivan Pavlov as a "madman." You know - Pavlov? The guy who won a Nobel Prize in 1904? Religious Technology Center (RTC) - The RTC administers Scientology's trademarks. David Miscavige, Scientology's current leader, is the RTC's Chairman of the Board. Ron the Poet - Okay, this was just too funny not to share. In addition to his myriad other skills, it seems Mr. Hubbard is a poet as well. Here you can read a wide selection of his (hilariously bad) poetry, from the confusing Ode to Circuits to the incredibly ironic There Is No Compromise With Truth. He even wrote a poem honoring Anonymous! Scientology Effective Solutions - A series of similar websites on various topics:
Scientology Handbook - Covers a wide variety of "practical" Scientology knowledge in detail. Includes an explanation of the ARC triangle. Also includes the single funniest thing I've ever found on a Scientology website: the Illustrated Tone Scale Diagram.
Scientology Kids - Explains Scientology's views on parenting. Scientology Missions International (SMI) - The body that oversees all Scientology missions worldwide. Missions are smaller and more numerous than churches but still provide basic "services" to members and the public. Scientology Myths - A relatively new website that's sprung up attempting to defend Scientology against its numerous critics. It doesn't do a very good job, however. For instance, the page on homosexuality actually tries to make it sound like they have no problem with it, even though Dianetics - one of their most important texts - describes homosexuals as "sexual perverts" and "quite ill physically." Their strategy, it would seem, is "let's hope they haven't read Dianetics!" Scientology Today - Discusses current events in the world of Scientology. Includes a list of Scientology frequently asked questions. For instance: "Why has Scientology been to court a lot of times?" Yeah, I'll bet that is a frequently asked question. Silent Birth - Scientology is all about keeping things quiet. Sterling Management Systems - Another front organization. Offers seminars, workshops, and consulting services for working professionals. Volunteer Ministers - These are Scientologists who show up in the aftermath of major crises like 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Virginia Tech shooting. They administer "touch assists" (the most useless kind of First Aid imaginable) and keep away those mean psychiatrists. Way To Happiness - A booklet that promotes a bunch of feel-good moral principles like "Do Not Murder" and "Love and Help Children." Maybe David Miscavige should have a closer look at Chapter 9, "Don’t Do Anything Illegal." What Is Scientology? - Goes into quite a bit of detail about the complex beliefs of Scientology. Includes a diagram of the Bridge to Total Freedom and a church organization chart. Note that the latter is often not well followed in practice. World Institute of Scientology Enterprises (WISE) - An international membership organization that claims to offer ethical business solutions, based - of course - on the writings of L. Ron Hubbard. They seem to target dentists particularly. World Literacy Crusade - An Applied Scholastics literacy program. Here I am using "literacy" in its lesser-known meaning, "converting people to Scientology." Yellow Shirts - Another Volunteer Ministers site. Judging by the number of posts in the forum, they don't get a lot of traffic. Youth for Human Rights International - An organization that promotes the thirty human rights listed in the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. One wonders if L. Ron Hubbard knew about Article 12, which reads "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation." |
